We encounter a great difficulty in selecting engg. branch after our entrance exam.
Actually engg. is just a practical application of what we have studied till 12th. Mainly different stream of engg. are related to specific part of physics chemistry and computer.
We can select engg. stream according to our interest in subject and specific field of subject.
Here I have tried to incorporate various field required in specific branch of engg.
IN ALL BRANCHES 1ST YEAR SYLLABUS IS ALMOST COMMON BECAUSE IT GIVES US IDEA THAT OF WHAT FIELD'S APPLICATION WE ARE GOING TO STUDY. SOME MANAGEMENT AND MATHEMATICAL SUBJECTS ARE REQUIRED IN EVERY BRANCH AS THIS KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE THERE TO BE AN ENGINEER.
1. ELECTRONICS : To enter in the branch involving electronics one should be at least average in 12th mathematics and average in 12th physics part involving elctrostats and effects in current.
Further advancement in subjects can be easily learned with these aspects.
Choice of various electronics branch depends upon there application area in industry which is provided with each branch.
Electronics starts with semiconductor part of chemistry and involves electrostatic and effect of current part of 12th physics applied to that part.(which is not very hard even if you haven't studied you can easily learn).and involves a great use of mathematics starting from integration and differentiation of 12th.
Electronics is a branch which works on electric voltage from 0-30 V.
After that digital electronics is studied which starts with the binary no. system and basic gates (AND,OR,NOT etc.).
Analog part of electronics starts with the simple electric circuits involving resistors, battery, inductors, capacitors(studied in effects of current in 12th physics).
Application of mathematics is also studied that involves control system and network analysis(involves mathematics on circuits).
Electronics can be divided into many branches like electronics and communication (EC) , EIC (Electronics Instrumentation and Control) , EEE (Electrical and Electronics), IN (Instrumentation)
EC involves electronics part (told above) and communication part which is completely new to the 12th after student and has application in the field of Radar, Satellite ,T.V. ,Mobile towers etc. along with the field of electronics involving chips formation , Lasers , Circuits.
EIC involves electronics (told above) and various instrumentation subjects like transducers, electronic instruments etc. and controlling application like Robotics, Artificial Intelligence etc.
Appliicatiion of EIC is in areas oof Automation, Sensors, Robotic appliication, Instrument handling Etc.
EEE involves electronics and some electrical aspects like power system , motors. Involves Electrical application along wiith Electronics.
IN includes more measurement subjects and less electronics subjects.Application in industry involves handling and controlling of industrial instruments, Medical related instruments supervision etc.
*SCOPE: after completing degree in electronics one can opt for campus placement , M.Tech through reputed colleges(by giving gate exam) , can go for public sector units i.e. PSUs (GAIL,SAIL,BEL,BHEL,NALCO,DRDO,NTPC ETC) and my government posts are also available. One can also prepare for IES(Indian Engg. Services).
2.ELECTRICAL: In selecting electrical stream we must have interest in magnetic effect of electric current (class 12th topic) along with electrostats and mathematics involving differential equations, integration and differentiation. One having love for various motors and eletcric machines and house hold circuitry can opt for this branch.
Electrical branch is engg. branch working on electricity of more then 200 V.
Before the discovery of electronics, electrical contained electronics so it contains subject related to electronics also such as analog and digital electronics , digital system design etc.
Main subjects involve machine 1 , machine 2 and power system and power electronics.
3.MECHANICAL: Mechanical is the oldest and most famous branch of engg. One can opt for mechanical engg. if he/she has interest in kinematics, thermodynamics, fluids, Rotational motion (class 11th physics almost) and mathematics involving differential equation, integration, differentiation.this branch also involve some aspect of drawing(not very difficult).
This branch of engg. involves more workshops in college and field work after college.
Mechanical engg. starts with material science somewhat related to chemistry and then applying physical phenomenon to them.
In application of mechanical engg. we focus on design and adjustment of instruments, air conditioners, refrigeration , robotics , computer based numerical control etc.
4.COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: This branch of engg. is completely different from other branches. In this branch there is little link to physics and chemistry studied in 11th and 12th class. Its a totally different and modern aspect of engg. However include a introduction to digital electronics as a important subject as computer works on digital environment.
*Main problem arises in understanding the difference between two branches i.e. C.S. and I.T.
In C.S. branch architecture of computer languages is understood by applying mathematical approach, models and various algorithms. So this field involves computational development.
In I.T. branch applications of various programming languages are developed and used in various field. So this field involves networking and administration of 'hardware & software'.
*SCOPE: On these field cooperate world depends , so having very vast opportunities in private sector. As India is a hub of IT sector so requirement is always growing.
In government post there is little setback for this area. Bus career is bright after having a post graduation.
Students having desire for government jobs should not opt for this field.
5.CIVIL: Civil engg. is oldest branch and has a very vast history. Students opting for civil engg. should have basic knowledge of chemistry , material science, geography and environmental condition. This branch also has little relation with previous studies till 12th.Students having interest in designing and architect work should opt for this branch.
*SCOPE: Civil engg. has a very wide scope in government sector. Students can achieve great position in civil engg. through IES and PSU (contain large no. of seats).
however co-operate sector in civil engg. is not very vast.
Students usually don't prefer higher studies in civil engg.

Great work Anurag... it will be a great help for all the engineering aspirants who all face problems while selecting/choosing the specific stream/branch during the time of councelling in different colleges of engineering.
ReplyDeleteDue to the lack of knowledge about every specific branch students land up in wrong line of field (like most of us) due to which they face problems not only during their 4 year programme but also after the completion of graduation.
